Volunteer Opportunities

CALM is always in need of volunteers in areas of individual interest and facility needs. CALM volunteers perform daily routine chores, which enable staff to complete more complex tasks or projects. CALM volunteers may assist animal keepers, assist the maintenance staff or educate the visiting public. Group volunteer events are also available.

For your safety, ALL volunteers must wear long pants (jeans are best) and closed-in shoes. No shorts, capris, ¾ length pants, workout/yoga pants/spandex, flip flops or sandals will be allowed. All volunteers age 13-15, must be accompanied by an adult. Please do not talk on your phone or text while volunteering at CALM.

California Coast Room Interpreter: Interpreters will work in the California Coast Room exhibit educating children and the general public about animals found off the California Coast and the creatures on exhibit. Minimum time requirement or one day per week at the 3 hour shift (10AM-1PM) or 2 hour shift (1PM-3PM). Minimum age requirement: 18 years old. Contact Jordan Reed at 871-1883.

Animal Keeper Assistant: Animal keeper volunteers will work side by side with animal keeper staff performing daily cleaning and animal care duties. Working with these animals, will show your reliability and responsibility in the care for all animals within the zoo. Minimum time requirement: 2 hours. Minimum age requirement: 13 – 15 years old with an adult.
To schedule a time to volunteer, please call 872-2256

Docent: The word “docent” (doe-cent) comes from the Latin meaning to teach. Docents are volunteer “teachers” who educate school children and general visitors about California wildlife and their habitats. Completion of the training class is necessary. The training class meets on a weekly basis for 3 months. To see if you are interested in learning and presenting what you learn, schedule a time to come observe some of our educational programs. Minimum time requirement: 4 hours per month for and 1 year after training. Minimum age requirement: 18 years old. Contact Jordan Reed at 871-1883.

Eagle Scout Projects:
Eagle Scout projects are always needed at CALM. Scouts help beautify the zoo and earn their title while providing a valued service.
