About Giant Garter Snake

The giant garter snake is the largest of the species growing to lengths of 3 to 4 feet. Their body is usually brown, olive, or black with yellowish dorsal stripes. In the San Joaquin Valley, garter snakes may have no stripes or indistinct stripes.

The endemic giant garter snake is state and federally listed as Threatened.

Habitat

Garter snakes are highly aquatic and can be found in areas with an abundant slow moving water source. They are highly secretive and prefer areas that have vegetation close to the water. The degradation of wetlands in the central valley has greatly reduced their natural habitat.

Fun Fact

When garter snakes are picked up or feel threatened, they will excrete a foul-smelling musk for defense.
