About California Newt
Terrestrial adults can be 4 to 8 inches long with a yellow/orange coloring below and a yellowish brown coloring on top. They are stocky salamanders with rough skin. Aquatic larvae are light yellow
with two dark bands down their backs.
Habitat
They are one of five members of the newt family (Salamandridae) which inhabit California. This species is located on the coastal range of California from Humboldt County to the Mexican border. Other populations are also located along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Fun Fact
Their skin contains powerful toxins to deter predators.
