About Coachwhip Snake

Coachwhip snakes are long, thin, and fast, speeding up to 4mph. Adults can reach lengths of 8 feet though generally are only 4 to 6 feet long. They are generally shades of brown with a braided pattern on their backs giving them a whip like appearance.

The endemic San Joaquin coachwhip is state listed as a Species of Special Concern.

Habitat

They are found in open areas of desert, grassland, scrub and sage- brush, including rocky, sandy, flat and hilly ground, and avoiding dense vegetation. It will seek refuge in rodent burrows, under shaded vegetation, and under surface objects.
