Master Plan

Legacy Campus

Enhancing CALM Zoo’s existing habitats, trails, visitor spaces, and core campus experience.

Phase 2

Building on the Heart of CALM Zoo

The Legacy Campus represents the established heart of CALM Zoo. Rather than replacing the character of the existing campus, the Master Plan builds on it with updated habitats, improved circulation, expanded natural areas, and enhanced visitor amenities.

These improvements are intended to strengthen both animal care and the guest experience while preserving the familiar spaces that generations of Kern County families know and value.

Legacy Campus Improvements

Refreshing CALM’s Existing Campus

The Legacy Campus improvements focus on modernizing existing habitats, creating stronger connections throughout the Zoo, and adding amenities that make visits more comfortable and engaging.

Central Promenade

A refreshed central pathway will improve circulation through the heart of CALM Zoo and create stronger connections between habitats, amenities, and gathering spaces.

Woodland Trail

The Woodland Trail will provide a more immersive walking experience through shaded, naturalistic areas of the existing campus.

Riparian & Waterfowl Expansion

Expanded riparian and waterfowl areas will strengthen habitat quality while creating new opportunities for visitors to experience native wetland species.

Legacy Habitat Updates

Existing habitats throughout the original campus will be improved to support modern animal-care standards and a better guest experience.

Bighorn Sheep Expansion

The existing bighorn sheep area will be expanded to provide additional habitat space and improved viewing opportunities.

Reptile House Improvements

The reptile area will receive updates designed to improve animal habitats, visitor interpretation, and the overall exhibit experience.

Snack Hub & Food Options

New and improved food-service opportunities will give visitors more convenient places to rest, gather, and enjoy refreshments during their visit.

Event & Gathering Spaces

Flexible gathering areas will support community events, educational programs, and other visitor experiences within the existing campus.
